Carta Equity Portal: Complete Guide for Employees

Carta is an equity management platform that lets employees track their equity, and exercise options directly through their account.
As startup equity becomes a more significant part of compensation, managing and tracking it effectively is crucial. That’s where an equity portal like Carta comes in. Carta is a top choice for startups and employees alike, simplifying the process of managing stock options, keeping track of valuations, and making informed decisions about exercising shares. Here’s an in-depth look at what Carta offers and how it can help employees make the most of their equity.
Carta is an equity management platform that helps private companies manage their cap tables, issue stock options, and give employees a portal to view and manage their equity.
For many startups, equity portals have become essential tools for transparency and communication around stock-based compensation. By offering a centralized place for equity-related information, employees can access details like vesting schedules, grant information, Fair Market Value (FMV), and even exercise options directly.
Carta stands out as one of the most popular equity portals, known for its intuitive user interface and comprehensive features.
Carta has quickly become a leader in the equity management space, trusted by thousands of startups to manage and administer their equity plans. Here are some of the main reasons why Carta is such a valued tool:
Carta offers a range of features that help employees manage their equity. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find in key sections of the platform.
The Portfolio view in Carta provides an overview of your entire equity portfolio, including stock options, grants, and other holdings. It’s designed to give you a snapshot of where your equity stands.
The Holdings tab dives deeper into your stock options and equity details. It’s a valuable resource for understanding the specifics of your grants.
The Holdings tab provides essential information for employees who want to plan around their vesting schedules and understand their stock option agreements.
The Exercise Simulator is one of Carta’s most powerful tools, helping employees make informed decisions about exercising their stock options. Most importanly it will show your stock option taxes.
The Exercise Simulator is particularly useful for employees who want to balance potential gains with tax efficiency, providing projections to help guide these important financial decisions.
Beyond the basics, Carta offers additional features that provide further insights and resources:
Getting into Carta for the first time is straightforward, but the process is a little different from signing up for a typical app, your company controls the invitation.
Can't access your account? Contact your company's HR or equity administration team first, they control access and can resend your invitation or troubleshoot permission issues on their end. Carta's own support team will often refer you back to your employer for grant-specific questions.
Mobile app: Carta has a mobile app for both iOS and Android, which lets you check your vesting progress, grant details, and portfolio value on the go. It covers the core features you'd use day-to-day without needing to log in on a computer.
One important note: Your Carta account is tied to the company that invited you. If you've worked at multiple startups that use Carta, you may end up with separate portfolios, one per company, each accessible from the same login.
Carta and Shareworks are the two most common equity portals at private startups, and the employee experience between them is noticeably different.
Interface: Carta is the more modern and visually intuitive of the two. Shareworks is more feature-dense, which can feel cluttered until you know where to look.
Exercise simulator: Both platforms let you model the cost of exercising your options. Carta surfaces AMT estimates for ISOs and tax withholding for NSOs directly in the tool; Shareworks offers similar functionality but buries it a bit deeper.
Portfolio visibility: Carta leads with your current equity value on the main dashboard. On Shareworks, that information takes more clicks to find.
Mobile: Carta has a dedicated iOS and Android app. Shareworks does not.
Your company chooses the platform, not you. But if you've used both, or are switching jobs and landing on an unfamiliar portal, our Shareworks guide covers it in the same depth as this one.
For startup employees, understanding the value and potential of their stock options is essential for making the most of their equity. Carta’s platform gives you the tools to track, exercise, and manage your options in one place, helping you make informed decisions and avoid potential pitfalls. From monitoring FMV to simulating tax scenarios, Carta’s features are tailored to give employees control over their equity.

Carta is an equity management platform used by both companies and employees. On the company side, it handles cap table management, 409A valuations, and equity plan administration. For employees, it's where you view your stock option grants, track your vesting schedule, see the current fair market value of your shares, and initiate exercises.
Yes. Employees never pay to use Carta. Your company covers the cost of the platform, you simply receive an invitation and create a free account to access your equity information.
Carta's Exercise Simulator (covered above) lets you model the cost and tax implications before you commit. Once you're ready, you can initiate an exercise request directly through the platform. Schedule a CallThis innovative service promotes and enables a healthier relationship between companies and employees. I my opinion it's valuable to employees and great for the overall tech environment and economy. It is good for nobody when employees feel trapped because they can't afford to leave. In less extreme cases exercising can be expensive and somewhat risky and this is simply a good smart hedge and a good square deal. Brilliant!
